She allegedly caned an eight-year-old girl student injuring the child's eye on December 14
CHENNAI: A teacher who allegedly caned an eight-year-old girl student injuring the child's eye on December 14 was arrested here on Saturday.
Police sources said Renuka (48), a Tamil language teacher in Corporation Primary School in Mangalapuram, Otteri, had reportedly caned Madhumitha, a Standard III student of the school.
The girl was injured after a piece from a bangle worn by the teacher, broke and hit her right eye.
Madhumitha was given first aid and later sent for treatment to an eye hospital.
"The girl was treated in the Government Eye Hospital in Egmore and even underwent an operation.
"The condition of her eye worsened in the last few days and doctors said she may lose vision in the injured eye. We registered a complaint at the Police Commissioner's office on Thursday," said R. Tara, the victim's aunt.
Otteri police booked a case under IPC Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety) and arrested Renuka. She was produced in a city court and released on bail.
