Google puts songs a click away in search

Google puts songs a click away in search

AP
Internet users can search by artist name, album or song title and can even access a song by typing in part of its lyrics.
APInternet users can search by artist name, album or song title and can even access a song by typing in part of its lyrics.

A new music feature rolled out by Google Inc. will bring its U.S. searchers one click away from listening to a full-length song.

The simple design brings up to four songs to the top of search results. Once one is clicked on, the song will play on pop-up players from MySpace or Lala. The search results are also accompanied by album art and links to music sites Pandora, imeem and Rhapsody.

Internet users can search by artist name, album or song title and can even access a song by typing in part of its lyrics.

The clutter-free box pushes down other search results, such as the artists' home page and fan sites, and reduces what Google Inc. calls "time to result," in this case meaning how much clicking one has to do to hear a song.

"Within that mission of trying to make music search easier is to keep it simple," said R.J. Pittman, Google's director of product management. "Exercising great restraint in the design of this is what's going to maximise its adoption."

Recording companies are supportive of the move to put legitimate sources of music at the forefront.

"This is about extending reach," said Courtney Holt, president of MySpace Music, the social network's joint venture with recording companies.

It marks a big coup for News Corp.'s MySpace, which spent $20 million this month to buy music recommendation engine iLike. ILike had been working on the project with Google for months, according to co-founder Ali Partovi.

After clicking on a song, a MySpace music player will pop-up roughly half the time to play it in full at least once, with an option to buy song downloads from Amazon.com Inc. or Apple Inc.'s iTunes.

Users who try to listen to the same song again may get only shorter previews, though the full-length songs along with videos, tour dates, and ticketing and other band information remain available by clicking through to the MySpace or iLike websites.

Lala, whose player powers the other half of song plays, also offers a way to purchase a song download from its collection of more than 7 million songs after offering one free listen.

The Palo Alto-based start-up, in which Warner Music Group Corp. invested $20 million, benefits by being exposed to the millions of people who conduct music-related searches on Google every day.

Lala also offers songs that can be played forever online for 10 cents each and is preparing to launch an iPhone app that enables users to listen to those songs on the go.

"If you think about music discovery today, the vast majority begins with a Google search," said Lala co-founder Bill Nguyen. "This is going to be the shortest path from interest in music to the ability to play it."

Lankan scholar caught in Tamil meet politics

From S Murari, Chennai
Chennai, 28 October, ( Asiantribune.com):

sivathambi[1].jpg
Karthikesu Sivathambi
Renowned Sri Lankan Tamil scholar Karthikesu Sivathambi finds himself caught in the politics over the World Classical Tamil conference being held in Coimbatore in June 2010.

Denying reports that Prof Sivathambi will not be attending, Chie Minister M Karunanidhi has said the scholar has written to him, agreeing to take part and even suggested topics for discussion.

In a statement, he has said those who are spreading reports that Prof Sivathambi would not take part are acting as stumbling blocks to his efforts to promote Tamil.

" Mr Sivathambi himself has informed us that he will be present well in time for arrangements to be made for the research session. He has also indicated five subjects for discussion", Mr Karunanidhi said.

Further, it was only because Mr Sivathambi had asked for more time for scholars to prepare research papers that the conference was postponed from January to June 2010, he said.
However, quoting Mr Sivathambi, media reports maintained that he was reluctant to take part.
In an interview given recently to BBC Tamil Service, Mr Sivathambi had categorically said it would be inappropriate for him to attend the world classical Tamil conference organised by the DMK government.

In yet another interview to a pro-Tamil website as recently as last Saturday, the scholar had said he would not take part in the conference organised by the DMK Government and that he had written to the conference organiser, Thanjavur University Vice-Chancellor M Rajendran, expressing dissatisfaction over the stand taken by Mr Karunanidhi on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue.

Professor_Noboru_Karashima.jpg

The issue has been mired in controversy from the very outset when Mr Karunanidhi unilaterally announced that the ninth World Tamil Conference would be held in Coimbatore in January next. He found himself caught on the wrong foot with Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary.

J Jayalalitha pointing out that only the Japan-based International Association of Tamil Research was authorised to hold the conference and countries could only play host. She also questioned Mr Karunanidhi's moral right to host such a conference after having remained silent when Malaysian Tamils took to the streets to fight for their rights and more recently when Tamil civilians were put to untold hardship during the last stages of the Eelam war.

The IATR refused to be presented with a fait accompli and its president Noboru Karashima said it would need at least a year to prepare the conference. Not willing to wait till January 2011 as the next Assembly elections were due in April that year, Mr Karunanidhi put it off to June 2010 and renamed it as World Classical Tamil conference, thus accepting Ms Jayalalitha's contention that only the IATR is authorised to hold such a conference.

At the same time, he pointed out that even when she hosted the last conference held in Tamil Nadu in 1995, she only got post-facto approval from IATR.

The latest to be caught in this battle between Mr Karunanidhi and the opposition is Mr Sivathambi. Now that Mr Karunanidhi has said he has agreed to attend, it is left to the scholar to explain what made him change his mind after having gone public with his reluctance to take part.

The 77-year-old professor emiritus of the Jaffna University, who is also the secretary-general of the IATR, has often been accused by critics of being subservient to powers-that-be and sailing with the wind.

Several Bangalore doctors fall prey to swine flu

Several Bangalore doctors fall prey to swine flu

October 27th, 2009

BANGALORE - Members of the medical fraternity across Bangalore's hospitals are undergoing special screening tests for the H1N1 virus, after seven doctors in the city tested positive for swine flu recently.

The seven are from Victoria Hospital and Bowring Hospital, informed a health department official.

"Hospitals across Bangalore are conducting special screening tests for H1N1 virus among its doctors to keep the pandemic at bay. It's not just the doctors and nurses treating swine flu patients who are at the risk of getting infected by the virus, but medical staff in every hospital is at risk, as they come across people who are suffering from swine flu," principal secretary for health I.R. Perumal told IANS.

Health officials maintain that medical staff are taking all precautionary measures including using triple layered masks and special hand sanitisers.

"While treating swine flu patients, doctors take adequate measures not to get themselves infected by the H1N1 virus. However, every day medical staff treat patients who are yet to be tested positive for the virus without any protection," said Shashidhar Buggi, director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), Bangalore's main hospital treating swine flu patients.

Health officials maintain that there is adequate supply of masks to hospitals and all the medical staff including doctors are being educated about the protective measures.

"Initially, prophylactic dosages of Tamiflu were being administered to doctors and paramedical staff. However, we've stopped the process. Prophylactic dosage of Tamiflu does not give permanent protection from H1N1 virus. If medical staff develop swine flu later, Tamiflu will not have any effect on their body," Perumal said.

At least 55 doctors and paramedical staff across Bangalore have shown symptoms of swine flu so far.

Karnataka has the second highest number of swine flu related deaths in the country after Maharashtra. The state has already registered 111 swine flu related deaths. Of them, 82 were in Bangalore. The total number of confirmed swine flu cases in the state till date is 1,392, health officials stated.

Raja rules out resignation over spectrum allocation scam

Raja rules out resignation over spectrum allocation scam

Updated on Thursday, October 22, 2009, 22:46 IST

New Delhi: Telecom Minister A Raja on Thursday night ruled out resignation in the wake of CBI searches in his ministry in connection with the controversial spectrum allotment issue.

"The question of my resignation does not arise. All decisions on spectrum licensing have been taken in accordance with procedures laid down by TRAI and in consultations with the Prime Minister," he told reporters late in the night.

Raja said nowhere has CBI pointed out that the Minister has had a role in spectrum allotment, an issue that is alleged to have caused a revenue loss of Rs 22,000 crore to the Government.

"I stand by my reply in Parliament and I have already justified the major policy decisions," he said, adding that he did not expect the BJP or for that matter AIADMK to support him on the issue.

He was replying to a question about BJP's demand for his resignation in the wake of CBI conducting searches in the Ministry.

Earlier in the day, the CBI conducted searches in the offices of the wireless planning cell (WPC), the department responsible for allocating spectrum, and the office of Deputy Director General (Access Services).

Raja said the policy decision to issue licences to new players to bring competition in the telecom sector was taken as per the recommendation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) dated February 27, 2007.

The licences were issued on the principle of first come first serve basis as had been followed since 1994 by all his predecessors inherited from the basic licencing conditions. The licences were issued for all operators.

So far as the licencing fee is concerned, these were termed as entry fee by Trai since there is separate spectrum licence charge.

"There was and there is a public notion that spectrum charge and licence fee are one and the same since spectrum charge is separate and licence fee was not revised by Trai in 2007 and as a matter of fact last month in the EGoM met on the 3G," he said.

Raja said that he has come to know that a case has been registered by CBI against officials of his ministry.

"For any procedural deviation or favouritism under this policy decision has to be dealt with by the investigating agency and the concerned officer will have to cooperative with the investigating officer," he said.

Raja debunked reports that there was a raid in his ministry and that officers had come only to look into "voluminous documents".
