Second broad gauge line between Madurai-Dindigul thrown open

Second broad gauge line between Madurai-Dindigul thrown open

Madurai (PTI):
The second broad gauge line between Madurai and Dindigul has been thrown open for traffic, Additional Railway General Manager V.Carmalus said on Thursday.

Talking to newsmen here, he said the trains were being operated at 70 km per hour since Monday, and the speed would be increased to 90 KM per hour.

Simultaneously, electrification work of the tracks between Dindigul and Madurai had been started.Electrification of Tiruchi-Villupuram sector had already been completed,he said.

The BG-conversion of Virudhunagar-Manamadurai and Madurai-Bodinayakanur sections also would be taken up.

To a question, he said electrification of Madurai-Villipuram section would be completed by 2010.

Women's special trains would be operated from August 5 at Chennai, he added.

Divisional Railway Manager Anil Singhal said downtrains were being operated on the second line between Dindigul and Madurai. The tracks would have to be consolidated before the speed of the trains was increased to 90 km an hour. The second track would provide a tremendous relief to existing BG track between Dindigul and Tiruchi which was being used to the extent of 140 per cent,he said.

The project to convert the 63-km distance was taken up in June 2007 in two phases. The first phase between Dindigul and Kodairoad was completed in September, and the second phase, from Kodairoad to Madurai was cleared early this month. Second track cost had escalated to Rs.150-crore from the sanctioned Rs.130 crore.

Microsoft, Yahoo agree on long-sought search deal

Microsoft, Yahoo agree on long-sought search deal

San Francisco (AP):
Microsoft has finally roped Yahoo into an Internet search partnership, capping a convoluted process that dragged on for years.

The 10-year deal announced on Wednesday gives Microsoft access to the Internet's second-largest search engine audience, adding a potentially potent weapon to the software maker's Internet arsenal as it girds for an all-out assault against online search and advertising leader Google.

The extended reach will allow Microsoft to introduce its recently upgraded search engine, called Bing, to more people. The Redmond, Washington-based software maker believes Bing is just as good, if not better, than Google's search engine. Taking over the search responsibilities on Yahoo's highly trafficked site gives Microsoft a better chance to convert Web surfers who had been using Google by force of habit.

In return for turning over the keys to its search engine, Yahoo will get to keep 88 per cent of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell ads on some Microsoft sites.

Yahoo estimated the deal will boost its annual operating profit by $500 million and save the Sunnyvale, California-based company about $275 million on capital expenditures a year because it won't have to invest in its own search technology.

Poll boycott: Jaya says virtue, others say necessity

Poll boycott: Jaya says virtue, others say necessity

Chennai: It was early this week that AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced her party's decision to boycott the forthcoming Assembly by-elections to five constituencies, citing the use of money and muscle power by the DMK in the polls and the Election Commission's inability to check it. However, in Tamil Nadu, few believe that's the real reason.

Announcing the decision at Coonoor on Monday, Jaya lashed out at the Centre as well as the state government, in both of which rival DMK has a stake. "There is a feeling among leaders that there is no point in contesting in a situation where only money and muscle decide the outcome of a poll. Elections are not conducted in a democratic manner, and all complaints become irrelevant once the process is completed. This decision was taken to make all take notice of our genuine complaints," said a party leader.

However, both party insiders and political observers say the AIADMK's reasons could be far less lofty. For one, perhaps, that the party has not faredwell in consecutive by-polls since 2006, damaging workers' morale seriously. In the three by-polls in and around Madurai since the last Assembly elections, the DMK-led ruling alliance has romped home with a significant majority. The Lok Sabha elections, on which Jayalalithaa had pinned her hopes, came as a further blow.

"Another round of failure may not be the best medicine to rejuvenate our cadres," admitted a party leader on condition of anonymity.

The boycott call, incidentally, was first made by ally PMK, hours before the AIADMK adopted the resolution at its emergency executive committee meeting, and was immediately supported by junior partner MDMK. The Left parties, meanwhile, expressed surprise over the decision, but have declared they will contest the elections after all. .

"The way the AIADMK, PMK and MDMK moved forward with the decision to boycott suggests that there was an earlier agreement among them in this regard, and that it was merely formalised by the AIADMK executive committee," said a source in the Left.

Some caution, however, that the move could actually backfire on the AIADMK, with many seeing it as abdication of its responsibility as the main opposition party in an electoral democracy. "Of the five constituencies, the AIADMK has a strong presence in Bargur and Ilayamkudi. If they give the DMK a virtual walk-over, it would be more difficult to win these seats back in coming elections," noted the source.

Would the boycott have any effect?

Cho Ramaswamy, the noted social critic and satirist who has assumed the role of Jayalalithaa's consultant, says he understands why the AIADMK hopes so, but has his doubts. Giving the example of a recent by-poll at Thirumangalam, cited by some as one of the most corrupt elections in the state, he says: "The AIADMK's decision to boycott elections would make the public sit up and take notice of the way elections are managed here.

There were several complaints like distribution of money and gifts and bribing election agents, but no action was taken." However, he adds: "Who among the public remembers all those allegations? Even during the Lok Sabha elections, there were many charges of malpractices. What happened to those complaints? I doubt if the boycott would convince the public in any manner. If anything, it may only give more significance to smaller parties like the DMDK."

Meanwhile, undeterred, Jayalalithaa justified the boycott decision in a statement on Thursday. "Boycott is a perfectly legitimate form of democratic protest. The fact remains that the democratic process is being vitiated and the only way to register our protest is to boycott the polls."

To buttress her argument, she went way back to pre-Independence — a time and period, some would say, not really comparable. Mahatma Gandhi too, Jayalalithaa noted, had asked the Congress party to boycott elections in 1920s to register protest against unfair British laws.

Continental Airlines apologises to Kalam on frisking issue

New Delhi (PTI):
America's Continental Airlines, which had on Tuesday said there could be no exception to security frisking of its passengers, on Wednesday apologised to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam following a political uproar in the country.

In its apology to Mr. Kalam for frisking him at the international airport here in breach of protocol, it said it did not intend to offend the former President or the sentiments of the people of the country.

"We have tendered a formal apology to Dr. Kalam and we sincerely hope he will fly with us again," the airline said in a statement.

The statement comes in the backdrop of the uproar in Parliament on Tuesday over the frisking of the 77-year-old former President before he was to board a Newark-bound flight of the airline on April 21. The government had later registered an FIR against the "concerned staff" of the airline.

"Continental Airlines apologises to Dr. Kalam for any misunderstanding and/or inconvenience related to the security screening on April 21," the statement said.

"Our intention was never to offend Dr. Kalam or the sentiments of the people of India. Continental Airlines takes great pride and is honoured to have flown a respectable leader such as Kalam," it said.

The incident was condemned in Parliament where Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had described the act of frisking Mr. Kalam, who is exempted from security checks, as "unpardonable" and assured "corrective action".

The Civil Aviation Ministry has ordered a probe into the incident involving the ground security staff of the airline which subjected Kalam to the security check.

The airline had on Tuesday implied that Mr. Kalam was not exempt from frisking before boarding the aircraft.

In Wednesday's statement, the airline said, it reiterates its commitment to comply with regulations mandated by local authorities (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security) as well as U.S. authorities.
