The opposition AIADMK Friday began test runs for two more television channels to add to its Jaya TV basket.
AIADMK leader J. Jayalalitha inaugurated the eponymous channels here at an auspicious moment from her retreat at Siruthavu near Mahabalipuram.
Jaya TV's vice-president, news, K.P. Sunil, told the media here: 'The two new channels would on news and music, respectively.'
Jaya Plus will be a 24-hour news channel and Jaya Max will be a music channel.
'It is a soft launch at the moment,' Sunil said.
The Jaya TV group has been operating only one channel for the past nine years, which offered mixed fare including news and entertainment.
It provided competition to Sun TV, part of the Sun Network managed by Kalanidhi Maran, grandnephew of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi.
DMK is the political archrival of AIADMK.
Jayalalitha has long been alleging that up-linking permission had been withheld as long as Dayanidhi Maran, younger brother of Kalanidhi Maran, was union minister of telecommunications and IT.
Dayanidhi Maran was minister between June 2004 and May 2007.
Both these parties have been for the last decade using the full power of television for their political battles.
Full-time transmission of the new channels will begin by January from the group's studios in Ekkaduthangal on the city's southern outskirts, according to officials.
