Coimbatore, Feb. 6 (PTI): Expressing
disappointment over the final verdict of Cauvery Water Dispute
Tribunal, Erode-based Federation of Tamil Nadu Agriculturist
Associations (FTAA) today appealed the Centre to see that at least the
order was implemented, without affecting the cordial relationship
between neighbouring states.
Though the Triubnal has awarded 419 tmc
ft pof water to Tamil Nadu, in real terms it would be 192 tmc ft, which
would be 13 TMC lesser than what was allocated in the interim award 15
years ago, FTA secretary, S Nallasami told reporters here.
The Centre should also see to it that
the verdict was implemented in letter and spirit, since many river
disputes, despite Supreme Court orders, like Mullaperiyar in Kerala,
were unimplemented, Nallasami said.
With average 1250 MM rainfall and
availablity of 70,000 tmc of water annually, the country was utilising
only 20,000 tmc of water and allowing the remaining to go to sea, he
Considering the huge waste and also to
avoid friction between states, linking of rivers, by nationalising
them, was the only solution to maintain peace in the country, he said.
By this, the country could also avoid 'politicisation and exploitation of such emotional issues,' he added.
